What spark plugs do, and how they wear out
Every gas engine has one spark plug per cylinder (a few designs use two). Thousands of times per minute, each plug fires an electric arc across a small gap between two electrodes, igniting the compressed fuel-air mixture that pushes the piston down. It's a brutal job — the tip lives inside the combustion chamber at temperatures over 1,000 degrees, getting hammered by explosions every rotation.
Plugs wear two ways. First, every spark erodes a microscopic amount of metal from the electrodes, so the gap slowly grows. A wider gap needs more voltage to jump, which strains the ignition coils and eventually causes weak or missed sparks. Second, plugs can foul — deposits of carbon, oil, or fuel additives coat the tip and short-circuit the spark before it can jump the gap. A fouled plug in an otherwise healthy engine usually points to another problem, like worn valve seals or a rich-running fuel system.
Either way, the result is the same: incomplete combustion, wasted fuel, and eventually a misfire the computer can detect.
Copper vs. platinum vs. iridium — and the real intervals
The electrode material determines how long a plug lasts, because harder metals erode slower.
Copper (technically nickel-alloy) plugs are the cheapest at $2 to $5 each, and they actually conduct spark slightly better than the exotic metals — but the soft electrodes wear fast. Real-world life is about 30,000 miles. Platinum plugs run $6 to $12 each and last around 60,000 miles. Iridium plugs cost $8 to $20 each, and the ultra-hard fine-wire electrode holds its gap for 100,000 miles or more.
Here's the part that matters: use what your engine was designed for. Most modern engines spec iridium from the factory because the ignition system, gap, and service interval were engineered around it — downgrading to copper to save $40 means doing the job three times as often. Going the other direction, putting $20 iridium plugs in an old engine designed for copper buys you nothing but a bigger parts bill. Your owner's manual lists the plug type and interval; that's the answer.
What's included in a spark plug replacement
A proper job replaces every plug — all four, six, or eight — never just the one that's misfiring. Plugs wear as a set, and mixing one new plug with old ones just schedules your next breakdown.
The tech removes the ignition coils or plug wires, blows debris out of the plug wells so nothing falls into the cylinder, and backs each plug out with the engine cool (critical on aluminum heads — hot aluminum grips steel threads). Each new plug gets its gap checked against spec before installation, even 'pre-gapped' plugs, because they get knocked around in shipping. Then each plug is threaded in by hand to prevent cross-threading and torqued to the manufacturer's spec — usually somewhere between 15 and 25 lb-ft. Torque matters more here than almost anywhere on the engine: too loose and the plug can overheat or blow out of the head; too tight and you stretch the threads or crack the insulator.
Anti-seize is a genuine debate among mechanics. Most modern plugs have plated shells and the manufacturers — NGK and Denso both — say don't use it, because it acts as a lubricant and leads to over-torquing. Some techs still use a tiny amount on older engines or aluminum heads with a history of seizing. Either approach is defensible; gobbing it on and cranking the plug down is not.
While the coils are off, a good tech inspects each coil boot for cracks, carbon tracking, and oil intrusion. Boots are cheap to replace during this job and annoying to replace later, and a torn boot will misfire just like a bad plug.
Why the price varies so much
Access is everything. On most four-cylinder engines the plugs sit in a row on top of the engine under four easily-removed coils — a 20 to 30 minute job, and the low end of the labor range. On many V6 engines, especially transverse-mounted ones (engine sitting sideways, which is most front-wheel-drive V6 sedans and minivans), the rear three plugs hide against the firewall under the intake plenum. Reaching them means unbolting and lifting the upper intake manifold, which adds an hour or more of labor plus a new plenum gasket. That's how the same service costs $120 on one car and $450 on its V6 sibling.
Plug count and plug price stack on top of that: a four-cylinder needs four $8 plugs, a V8 needs eight $15 plugs. This is also a great job for a mobile mechanic on most engines — it needs hand tools and a torque wrench, not a lift. The exception is the intake-off V6 jobs, where some mobile techs will still take it on but the driveway savings shrink.
Symptoms of worn spark plugs
Worn plugs announce themselves gradually. The engine idles a little rougher, especially cold. Fuel economy drops a few percent as combustion gets sloppier. Starts take an extra second of cranking. Acceleration develops a subtle stumble or hesitation under load, like climbing a hill or merging.
Eventually a cylinder starts missing outright, and the computer catches it: the check-engine light comes on, often with a misfire code (P0300 through P0308). A steady light means get it diagnosed soon. A flashing check-engine light is different — it means active misfires are dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, where it burns inside the catalytic converter and can destroy it in minutes. Flashing light: pull over, shut it down, and have it towed or driven very gently straight to a shop.
Worth knowing: every one of these symptoms can also come from a failing ignition coil, a vacuum leak, or a fuel problem. If your plugs are nowhere near their interval, don't let anyone sell you a plug job as a guess — ask for a diagnosis first.
How to save money on this repair
The cheapest spark plug job is the one done on schedule. Plugs left in an aluminum head for 150,000 miles can corrode into the threads and seize; then removal becomes a delicate extraction, and a plug that breaks off or pulls the threads out with it turns a routine service into machine-shop work — thread inserts, or in bad cases a cylinder head repair costing over a thousand dollars. On-time replacement is what prevents that.
Second, buy the plug the engine calls for and nothing fancier. Racing plugs, exotic multi-electrode designs, and 'performance' plugs in a stock commuter engine are pure marketing — the factory-spec NGK, Denso, or equivalent iridium plug is the right part. Third, bundle it: if the intake manifold has to come off for the rear plugs anyway, that's the moment to do the PCV valve or anything else living under there, because you're paying for that access once.
And get a second quote if the first one surprises you — plug jobs on the same vehicle can vary by $150 between shops purely on labor rate and parts markup.

How often do spark plugs really need to be replaced?
Whatever your owner's manual says — typically 30,000 miles for copper plugs, 60,000 for platinum, and 100,000 or more for iridium. Turbocharged engines often run shorter intervals because of higher cylinder pressures. The manual beats any generic rule, including this one.
Are iridium plugs worth the extra money?
If your engine specs them, yes — they hold their gap three times as long as copper and the ignition system was designed around them. If your engine specs copper, no — you'd pay four times the price for no performance gain, and some older ignition systems actually run better on copper. Match the spec, don't upgrade past it.
Can worn spark plugs actually damage my engine?
Indirectly, and the damage can be expensive. A misfiring cylinder sends unburned fuel into the exhaust, where it ignites inside the catalytic converter and melts its core — converters cost $1,000 to $2,500 to replace. Persistent misfires also strain ignition coils and wash oil off cylinder walls. That's why a flashing check-engine light means stop driving immediately.
Why does a spark plug job on my V6 cost triple what my neighbor paid for their four-cylinder?
Access. On many V6 engines — especially front-wheel-drive cars where the engine sits sideways — three plugs face the firewall and can only be reached by removing the upper intake manifold. That adds an hour-plus of labor and a gasket, on top of two extra plugs. Your neighbor's four plugs were probably sitting in plain view on top of the engine.
Can I replace spark plugs myself?
On an accessible engine, yes — it's a classic entry-level DIY job. But respect the two ways it goes wrong: cross-threading a plug into an aluminum head (always start plugs by hand, never with the ratchet) and wrong torque (buy or borrow a torque wrench — guessing leads to blown-out or seized plugs). Work on a cool engine, do one cylinder at a time so you never mix up coil positions, and blow out each plug well before removal.
Can a mobile mechanic do this in my driveway?
