Do You Really Need This?
If you fix other people's cars for money in California, yes. The state does not license you as a person. It registers your business as an Automotive Repair Dealer, and BAR says plainly that this includes mobile, referral and sublet repair. You may not take paid repair jobs until the number is issued.
The law is Business and Professions Code 9884.6. It says it is unlawful to be an automotive repair dealer unless you are registered and the registration is current.
What Happens If You Work Without One in California
- A fine of up to $5,000, on the spot. BAR issues a citation and an order to stop, says its notice on unlicensed activity.
- A misdemeanor. Breaking the repair dealer law can mean a fine of up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both, under B&P Code 9889.20.
- The District Attorney. Keep working and BAR can send the case to your local DA for criminal or civil action.
- Lost jobs. Anyone can look up a BAR registration in seconds. Fleets, dealers and careful customers do.
BAR Runs Stings on Mobile Mechanics
- CBS13 Sacramento went along on a state sting that booked unlicensed mobile mechanics as fake customers. BAR's chief put it simply: these are people you invite to your home to work on your car.
- ABC30 Fresno reported a two day BAR undercover sting that cited 16 people for illegal auto repair.
- A BAR sweep in Los Angeles County checked 253 shops and found 67 unlicensed or past due.
This Is What You Get in the Mail

This is our own approval letter from BAR, with sample details in place of ours. The bottom half is your registration. You post it where customers can see it, and mobile mechanics hand a copy to the customer with each work order.
Your ARD number goes on your invoices, your ads, your website and your truck. Once it is issued we put it on your MechanicRank listing and your Shop Desk invoices for you.
Why Mechanics Get Stuck
Eight Pages of Forms
The state application asks for owner details, entity papers, permits, service codes and background questions. One wrong box sends it back.
New Mobile Rules
Rules that took effect October 1, 2025 mean mobile mechanics need a real records address, the plate of each work vehicle and lettering on the truck.
Weeks Lost
The state says four to six weeks for a complete application. A mistake starts the wait over, and you cannot work legally until it clears.
Here Is Everything You Get
- A setup call. We check your business and tell you what is missing before anything is filed.
- Your state application, filled out. We complete form BAR-101 from your answers and check every item.
- The $200 state fee, paid by us. Once you sign, we pay it and file.
- Help with the pieces it asks for. Your free EIN from the IRS, your free seller's permit from CDTFA and your city business license, step by step.
- Mobile rules covered. Records address, vehicle plate and truck lettering.
- Tracking until you are issued. If the state asks for more, we help you answer the same day.
- Your number put to work. We add it to your MechanicRank listing and your Shop Desk invoices.
What It Costs
| Item | Do it yourself | With us |
|---|---|---|
| State application fee | $200 | Included |
| Filling out and checking the form | Your time | Included |
| Help with EIN and seller's permit | Your time | Included |
| Tracking and answering the state | Your time | Included |
| Total | $200 plus your time | $485 all in |
Your city business license fee, if your city charges one, is paid to your city. The state fee renews every year at $200 and the renewal is not part of this price. The EIN and seller's permit are free. Want to see what jobs pay once you are legal? Read our mobile mechanic prices study and the repair cost guides.

Questions
Do I need a license to be a mobile mechanic in California?
Yes. There is no license for you as a person, but the business must register with the state as an Automotive Repair Dealer. That is true for mobile mechanics with no shop too. You may not take paid repair work until the registration is issued.
Is it illegal to be a mechanic without a license in California?
Working on your own car is fine. Fixing other people's cars for pay without an Automotive Repair Dealer registration breaks state law and can bring fines and citations.
What does the $485 cover?
Everything. Our work and the $200 state application fee are both in the $485. We pay the state fee for you once you have filled everything out and signed. The state fee renews every year at $200, and that renewal is not part of this price.
How long does it take to get a BAR license in California?
The state says four to six weeks on average once it has a complete application. A missing item can slow it down, which is the main thing we help you avoid. We cannot promise a date, because the state decides.
Can I run a car repair business from home?
For the state, yes. You need a real street address where your records are kept and can be inspected, and a home can work. A PO box or a virtual mailbox is not allowed. Check your city rules too, because some cities limit repair work at home.
Can I work while my application is pending?
No. The state says you may not do paid repair work until your registration is issued. That is why getting it right the first time matters.
Are you part of the Bureau of Automotive Repair?
No. We are a private paperwork service run by Supercanic LLC. We are not the state and we do not work for it. You can file on your own for just the $200 state fee. We save you the time and the mistakes.
What if I have a past conviction?
The application asks about every conviction, even ones that were dismissed. You answer those questions yourself and you sign the form. A past record does not always mean a no. Tell us on the call and we will point you to what the state needs.
Is it refundable?
Yes, in full, if we find you do not qualify before we file. Once we have paid the state fee and filed your application, it is not refundable.
What about a smog check or brake and lamp license?
Those are separate licenses that need training and a state exam. You need the dealer registration first. Tell us on the form and we will point you to the next step.
All in, state fee included
Start My BAR Registration →MechanicRank is a Supercanic LLC service. We are a private paperwork service. We are not the California Bureau of Automotive Repair or any state agency, and we are not endorsed by one. You can apply to the state yourself for only the state fee. The state decides every application. State fees and rules are from bar.ca.gov as of October 2026 and can change.
