What the Numbers Show

About one job in four was a diagnostic visit and nothing else, with a median of $150. Finding the problem is often the whole job, and it is the cheapest one on the list.

Brakes were the most common repair. Engine and transmission replacement was the most expensive, with a median of $2,335. Pre-purchase inspections had a median of $225.

The typical car was a 2013 model. The makes we worked on most were Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet and Dodge.

How We Counted

  • Jobs. Every final invoice marked paid in the Supercanic shop's Shop Desk account between August 2025 and October 2026. Voided, zero-dollar, training and deposit invoices are left out. Exact duplicates (same job title, amount and day) are counted once.
  • Price. The invoice subtotal before sales tax. It includes parts and labor. Some jobs used a part the customer supplied, which is why the low end of a few rows is labor only.
  • Repair type. Set from the words in the job title and line items. A visit that only found the problem counts as a diagnostic visit even when a repair was booked later. Jobs that fit no type, or a type with fewer than 15 jobs, are in the overall median but get no row of their own.
  • Where. 85% of jobs with a recorded address were in the Inland Empire of Southern California (Riverside and San Bernardino counties). Prices elsewhere will differ with local labor rates.
  • Privacy. We publish counts and percentiles only. No customer, vehicle or single job can be picked out of this page or the CSV.
  • What this is not. It is one shop network, not the whole market. Shop counts by state are in mobile mechanics and repair shops by state, and our planning estimates for 91 repairs are in the repair cost guides.
