How We Counted
- Listings. Every business published in the MechanicRank directory on October 14, 2026. A listing needs a working phone number to be published. Duplicates that share a phone number are merged. National chains and dealer service departments are left out, so these are independent businesses.
- Mobile vs shop. A listing counts as mobile when its name or business category says it comes to you. That includes shops that also do mobile work. Every other listing counts as a shop. Each business is counted once.
- State. The state in the listing's address. A small number of listings with no usable state are left out.
- Population. U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division, annual estimates of the resident population for July 1, 2025 (Vintage 2025, NST-EST2025-ALLDATA).
- What this is not. It is a count of our directory, not a census of every repair business. We have added more cities in some states than others, so a high or low number can reflect our coverage as much as the market. Read per 100,000 figures as a comparison of listings, not a measure of how many mechanics work in a state.
- Updates. The table rebuilds from the live directory, so counts move as businesses are added or removed. First published 2026-10-09.
