What the compressor does, and how it fails
The AC system is a closed loop: refrigerant absorbs cabin heat in the evaporator, and the compressor — a belt-driven pump on the front of the engine — squeezes that refrigerant to high pressure so the condenser can dump the heat outdoors. Common questions
Can I drive with a bad AC compressor?
If it's simply not engaging, yes — you lose cold air and (on most cars) defrost dehumidification, nothing else. If it's making mechanical noise or the clutch is screeching, be careful: the compressor shares the serpentine belt with the alternator and often the water pump, and a compressor that seizes can snap that belt and disable the car.
