The most expensive thing to repair on most cars is the engine. A replacement runs about $2,950 to $7,520 in our repair cost guides at national labor rates. The transmission is a close second at about $2,070 to $4,800.

We run a repair shop in San Jacinto and Hemet, California, and we list 44,275 shops and mechanics on MechanicRank. So we do not have to guess. We pulled 953 paid invoices from our own shop. The engine and transmission jobs had a median bill of $2,335. The median of every paid job was $218. That is more than ten times as much.

Here is the full list, worst first, and the cheap fixes that keep you off it.

The Short Version

  • The engine is the top repair bill on most cars. Our guides put a replacement at $2,950 to $7,520.
  • The transmission is next. Replacement runs $2,070 to $4,800, and a rebuild $1,660 to $4,160.
  • On four wheel drive trucks, a transfer case or rear differential can run past $3,600.
  • Hybrid and electric car batteries are big ticket parts too, but they carry long warranties. Check yours before you pay.
  • Most of the worst bills start as a cheap one somebody skipped. A timing belt, a coolant leak or a misfire.

The 12 Most Expensive Car Repairs, Ranked

These ranges come from our own repair cost guides. Each one adds parts prices to standard labor times at $95 to $140 an hour, the national range. California runs higher, $120 to $175 an hour, so we show both. The list is ranked by the high end.

RepairNational RangeCalifornia RangeWhy It Costs So Much
Engine replacement$2,950 to $7,520$3,200 to $8,150The engine itself plus 10 to 18 hours of labor
Transmission replacement$2,070 to $4,800$2,220 to $5,150A $1,500 to $3,400 unit plus 6 to 10 hours
Transmission rebuild$1,660 to $4,160$1,860 to $4,6508 to 14 hours of tear down and rebuild
Transfer case$1,585 to $3,640$1,660 to $3,850Four wheel drive gear box, pricey part
Rear differential$1,085 to $3,640$1,160 to $3,850Gears and bearings in the rear axle
Turbo$1,130 to $2,880$1,220 to $3,125The turbo plus its oil and coolant lines
Timing chain$870 to $2,670$1,020 to $3,125Cheap parts, but 6 to 13 hours inside the engine
Head gasket$960 to $2,460$1,160 to $2,950A $200 gasket and 8 to 14 hours of labor
Rack and pinion$685 to $2,040$760 to $2,250The whole steering gear, plus an alignment
Heater core$595 to $1,850$720 to $2,200The dash often has to come apart to reach it
Catalytic converter$395 to $1,680$420 to $1,750Precious metals inside the part
AC compressor$590 to $1,360$650 to $1,500The part plus a full refrigerant service

Look at the reasons column. Some of these are big because the part is big, like an engine or a transmission. Others are big because of time. A head gasket costs about $200. The bill comes from the 8 to 14 hours it takes to get to it. The same goes for a timing chain and a heater core.

That matters when you get a quote. On a labor heavy job, the shop's hourly rate moves the total more than the part does. Ask for the hours and the rate on the quote, not just one number.

What Our Own Invoices Show

Price guides are estimates. Invoices are what people paid. We pulled every paid final invoice from Supercanic, our shop in San Jacinto and Hemet, from August 18, 2025 to October 17, 2026. That is 953 paid jobs, and the median car was a 2013. Amounts are before sales tax. We only show a repair type with 15 or more jobs, and the full study is on our mobile mechanic prices page.

Engine and transmission work sits alone at the top. The middle half of those 33 bills ran $1,600 to $3,153. Nothing else came close.

Median Paid Bill by Repair Type at Supercanic
  • Engine or transmission replacement (33 jobs)$2,335
  • Fuel pump or injectors (15 jobs)$530
  • Alternator (19 jobs)$515
  • Cooling system repair (48 jobs)$443
  • Starter (22 jobs)$438
  • Brakes (66 jobs)$310
  • All paid jobs (953)$218

Our own data. Supercanic paid final invoices, Aug 18, 2025 to Oct 17, 2026, before sales tax. Buckets under 15 jobs are left out.

Our median sits below the guide range for a full engine. Two reasons. That bucket mixes engines and transmissions, and the median car we fixed was a 2013. If you drive a newer car, a big truck or a European car, plan on the top half of the guide range.

The Cheap Repairs That Turn Into Expensive Ones

We see this every week. Very few of the big bills come out of nowhere. Most of them start as a small repair that got pushed to next month. Here is how the chain usually goes, with our guide ranges for both ends.

Skip ThisIt CostsIt Can Turn IntoWhich Costs
Timing belt on schedule$435 to $1,150Bent valves when the belt snaps on an interference engineHead work or a new engine, up to $7,520
Water pump or a coolant leak$310 to $910An overheat that blows the head gasket$960 to $2,460
Spark plugs and a misfire$115 to $440Raw fuel that melts the catalytic converter$395 to $1,680
Low or burnt transmission fluidA leak check or a fluid serviceSlipping that wears out the clutches inside$1,660 to $4,800

Two of these deserve a closer look.

The timing belt. It gives no warning before it breaks. Most belt engines built since the 1990s are interference engines, which means the pistons hit the valves when the belt goes. Check your owner's manual for the interval, and read our timing belt vs timing chain guide if you are not sure which one you have.

The flashing check engine light. A steady light can wait a few days. A flashing one means the engine is misfiring right now. Unburned fuel is going into the exhaust and burning inside the catalytic converter. Slow down, get off the road and get it checked that day.

Hybrid and Electric Car Batteries

Hybrid and electric cars add one more big part to the list. The battery pack. The U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov says a DOE study suggests these packs may last 12 to 15 years in moderate climates and 8 to 12 years in severe ones. It also says plainly that replacing one can be costly.

Heat counts as severe. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the San Jacinto station show about 120 days a year at 90 degrees or more, and about 39 at 100 or more. That is the kind of summer that ages a battery faster.

The good news is the warranty. The California Air Resources Board's warranty fact sheet, dated March 6, 2026, says the battery on a car certified as a PZEV or TZEV is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Your warranty booklet says if your car is one. Check it before you pay for a pack.

Check the Warranty Before You Pay

Some of the parts on this list are covered for years by law. The same CARB fact sheet lays out the federal and California emission warranties side by side.

WarrantyCoversHow Long
Federal emissions, major partsCatalytic converter, engine computer, OBD system8 years or 80,000 miles
Federal emissions, basicAny part that causes an emissions failure2 years or 24,000 miles
California, high cost partsParts listed in your owner's manual7 years or 70,000 miles
California, defects and performanceAll emissions related parts3 years or 50,000 miles
California, PZEV or TZEV batteryThe hybrid battery or energy storage10 years or 150,000 miles

So a dead catalytic converter on a six year old car with 60,000 miles may cost you nothing. Call a dealer with your VIN first. One catch. A warranty covers a part that failed on its own, not one killed by a misfire you drove on for months.

What the Top Results Get Wrong

We read the pages that rank for this question on October 18, 2026. Here is what we found.

  • No sources. One popular list puts an engine at $5,000 to $10,000 and up, with no source and no labor rate. Another names the five worst repairs and gives no prices at all.
  • Old data. The Consumer Reports piece is from February 3, 2021, and it is about which models cost the most to fix, not which repairs.
  • Luxury cars only. That same piece found factory struts on a Nissan GT-R at $2,000 or more each, and a water pump on a Lexus RX450h at more than four times the gas RX350. True, but most people searching drive a Civic or an F-150.
  • Averages that hide the big bills. AAA's Your Driving Costs 2025 puts maintenance, repair and tires at 11.04 cents a mile. But that figure covers a new car's first 5 years. The big repairs on this list mostly show up after that.

Is It Worth Fixing?

When the quote is for an engine or a transmission, ask three questions before you say yes.

  • What is the car worth after the repair? If the fix costs more than the car would sell for, a replacement car may be the better buy.
  • Is it really the big part? Low fluid, a bad sensor or a failed solenoid can look like a dead transmission. Pay for a real diagnosis first.
  • What does the warranty cover? Ask about parts and labor on the whole job, in writing.
  • Can you get a second quote? On a $2,000 bill, one more phone call is worth it.

What We Charge at Our Own Shop

We post our prices. Here are ours at Supercanic, the shop in San Jacinto and Hemet, California, that runs MechanicRank.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most expensive thing to repair on a car?

The engine. Our guides put an engine replacement at $2,950 to $7,520 at national labor rates. At our own shop, engine and transmission replacements had a median bill of $2,335 across 33 paid jobs.

What is the most expensive part of a car to repair?

The engine first, then the transmission. A transmission replacement runs about $2,070 to $4,800. On hybrids and electric cars, the battery pack is also a big ticket part, but it usually carries a long warranty.

What is the most expensive repair on a truck?

Usually the engine or the transmission, same as a car. Four wheel drive trucks add the transfer case and the rear differential, which can each run $1,085 to $3,640 or more.

Is a blown head gasket worth fixing?

Often, if the engine is otherwise healthy and the car is worth more than the repair. A head gasket runs about $960 to $2,460, mostly labor. If the engine overheated badly, ask for a compression or leak down test first.

Does warranty cover a catalytic converter?

Often, yes. Federal law covers the catalytic converter for 8 years or 80,000 miles on most cars, according to the California Air Resources Board. A converter killed by a long ignored misfire may not be covered.

How can I avoid expensive car repairs?

Do the cheap jobs on time. Change the timing belt at its interval, fix coolant leaks early, replace spark plugs before they misfire, and keep the transmission fluid full and fresh. Pull over for a flashing check engine light.
