Your car dies in a store parking lot, and you call roadside. Your car dies in your own driveway, and you call the same number. With AAA and Progressive, both calls get the same truck at no charge, as long as the tow stays inside your plan's miles.

I'm Anthony, the lead tech at Supercanic in San Jacinto and Hemet, California. People call us from the driveway all the time, sure their plan won't help at home. Most plans do help. The real catch isn't where the car starts. It's where the truck is allowed to take it, and how many miles you get for free.

  • AAA says it covers a breakdown at your home or office, and will tow to your home, a garage or the shop you pick.
  • Progressive says roadside works in your own driveway, with a tow anywhere inside a 15 mile radius.
  • GEICO tows up to 15 miles to the nearest qualified repair shop in most states, for as little as $14 a year per car.
  • Ford's plan tows to the nearest Ford dealer, and the car has to be within 100 feet of a road.
  • Card plans like Visa Roadside Dispatch aren't free. A standard call runs $69.95 with up to 5 tow miles.
  • AAA tows a car once per breakdown. Home first, then the shop, means paying for the second trip.

Five Plans Side by Side for a Car at Home

Every plan below will send a truck. What changes is the free miles, where the car can go, and what you still pay. These rules come straight from each company's own roadside page. Where a page says nothing about a car at home, the table says so instead of guessing.

Two plans spell out the driveway. AAA Mountain West Group says a membership covers a breakdown at your home, office or a similar place. Progressive says its roadside help works in your own driveway or on the road, for breakdowns that aren't from an accident.

GEICO and USAA don't mention home either way on their roadside pages. Neither does Amica. That isn't a no. It means your policy wording decides it, so call before the truck shows up, not after.

Where the Truck Takes It Is the Real Catch

A tow from home is almost always covered. A tow to home is where people get billed.

Nearest shop plans. GEICO tows up to 15 miles to the nearest qualified repair facility in most states. Amica tows to the nearest service station or another approved spot, and says the benefit is typically $100 per breakdown. Ford tows to the nearest Ford dealer. If you want your own mechanic across town, the extra miles are on you.

Your choice plans. AAA tows to the place you pick, and lists your home as one option. Its Club Alliance page says you can choose where the car goes as long as it's inside your towing limit. USAA covers one tow to the nearest shop or one you choose, and you pay the extra mileage past your policy distance.

The once per breakdown rule. AAA says it will only tow a car once per breakdown. So if the car dies at work, gets towed home, and then needs the shop, that second tow costs money. Pick the final stop on the first call.

What a tow costs with no plan. AAA Club Alliance puts a short 5 mile tow at about $75 to $150. Good Sam's roadside page lists overage charges of about $3 to $7 a mile past a plan's cap. That's why a 12 mile tow on a 5 mile plan isn't free.

The 100 Foot Rule Nobody Mentions

One limit matters more at home than on the highway. Ford's roadside page says towing is available when the car is within 100 feet of a road. Progressive uses the same 100 feet for winching a car that's stuck in mud, snow or sand.

Most driveways pass easily. A car parked behind a house, down a long ranch road, or in a back lot may not. Out here in Hemet and San Jacinto, plenty of lots have a project car sitting way back by the fence. If that's yours, say so on the call. The dispatcher needs to know before the truck rolls, not when it's sitting at the curb.

Tell them about a garage too. A car nosed into a tight garage or behind a locked gate changes the job, and you want that settled on the phone.

Be There When the Truck Shows Up

A car at home tempts you to leave the keys under the mat and go to work. Don't.

AAA says you must be with the vehicle, with a photo ID, at the time of service. Someone on the scene has to hold a AAA membership. Household members on the plan can call without the primary member, but one of them has to be there.

USAA says it plainly. If you leave, the only service it can give is a tow. So no jump start and no tire change on a car nobody is waiting with.

Skip the Tow When the Car Is Already Home

A car that won't start in the driveway often doesn't need a tow at all. It needs a battery, a starter or an alternator, and those are driveway jobs.

Supercanic closed 953 paid jobs from August 2025 to October 2026, and 92% of them were done at the customer's home or work. Our starter bills had a median of $438 over 22 jobs, and batteries ran $363 over 19 jobs. The full numbers are on our mobile mechanic prices page.

So think about the math before you burn a tow. A free tow to a shop still ends in a shop bill, plus a ride back to get the car. A mobile mechanic skips both trips. If you're not sure what's wrong yet, our guide to a car that won't start at home walks through the four usual causes.

Old Advice That Stuck

Roadside doesn't work at home. This one comes from British breakdown cover. The AA in the UK says its basic plan won't help within a quarter mile of your home, unless you add its At Home cover. American plans mostly don't work that way. AAA and Progressive both say they cover a car at home.

Roadside means a free tow anywhere. It means a free tow up to a limit. Five miles on AAA Classic. Fifteen on Progressive or GEICO. Past that, you pay by the mile.

Free means free. Even a covered call can leave a bill. Progressive says you pay for parts and repairs, and for on scene labor past one hour. GEICO says you pay for fuel, batteries, parts and replacement keys. The truck is free. What goes in the car usually isn't.

Using roadside counts as an accident claim. Amica says a covered loss doesn't have to happen for the coverage to be used. A dead battery in the driveway isn't a crash. If your rates worry you, ask your insurer straight out before you call.

Before You Call From the Driveway

Run this list first. It takes five minutes and can save a second tow bill.

  • Check your insurance app for roadside or towing coverage on this exact car.
  • Check the owner's manual or the carmaker's app for free roadside on a newer car.
  • If you have AAA, check your level. Classic covers 5 miles, Plus covers 100.
  • Decide the final stop now, since AAA only tows once per breakdown.
  • Measure the miles to that shop against your plan's limit.
  • Tell the dispatcher if the car is in a garage, behind a gate or far from the street.
  • Stay with the car, with your photo ID and membership card.
  • Ask what extra miles cost before the car goes on the truck.

Owners Ask Us

Will roadside assistance tow from home?

Usually, yes. AAA says it covers a breakdown at your home or office, and Progressive says its roadside works in your own driveway. GEICO, USAA and Amica don't say either way on their roadside pages, so call and ask before the truck comes.

Will AAA tow to my house for free?

Yes, if your house is inside your level's tow limit. AAA lists your home as a destination you can choose. Classic covers 5 miles, Plus covers up to 100 miles, and Premier gives one tow of up to 200 miles a year. Past the limit, you pay a per mile fee.

Do I have to pay for towing if I have roadside assistance?

Not for the covered miles. You pay for miles past the limit, and some plans only cover a tow to the nearest shop or dealer. Good Sam puts overage at about $3 to $7 a mile. Card plans like Visa Roadside Dispatch charge every time, $69.95 for a standard call.

What does roadside assistance not cover?

Repairs and parts, mostly. GEICO lists repair costs, parts, fuel, extra tow miles and long on scene labor as not covered. Progressive charges for labor past one hour. Ford's plan only tows a car within 100 feet of a road.

Where does roadside assistance take you?

It depends on the plan. AAA tows to the place you choose inside your limit, home included. GEICO tows to the nearest qualified repair shop. Ford tows to the nearest Ford dealer. Progressive tows anywhere within 15 miles.

How can I know if I have roadside assistance?

Check three places. Your car insurance app or declarations page, your owner's manual or carmaker app for a new car plan, and your credit card's benefits guide. If none of them list it, you can still call AAA or a local tow company and pay per use.
