P0300 Random Misfire Fixes Run $100 to $1,140
Prices updated October 2026

A cheap code reader tells you the car has a P0300. A $150 diagnostic tells you why, and that second answer is the one that saves money. The code only says the engine is missing on more than one cylinder, or missing at random. It never names a part, so a shop that sells you parts off the code alone is guessing with your money.
I'm Anthony, the lead tech at Supercanic in San Jacinto and Hemet, California. We list 48,054 shops and mechanics on MechanicRank. The fix is often cheap, like plugs or a coil. Sometimes it's a vacuum leak, a fuel problem or low compression. The trick is paying for the test before you pay for the parts.

Snapshot
- P0300 means a random or multiple cylinder misfire. It does not name the bad part.
- The usual fixes run $100 for one coil up to $1,140 for an intake gasket leak, parts and labor, on a midsize car at national shop rates.
- Our 254 paid diagnostic visits had a median of $150. Our 19 spark plug and coil jobs had a median of $214.
- A flashing check engine light means the misfire is bad enough to hurt the catalytic converter. Stop driving.
- Some cars keep the light steady during a bad misfire, so steady does not always mean mild.
- Pay for the test first. Plugs, coils, vacuum leaks, fuel pressure and compression are checked in that order.
What P0300 Means
Your engine computer watches the crankshaft spin. Each cylinder that fires gives it a small push. When one fails to fire, the crank slows for an instant, and the computer counts it. CarParts.com explains that the computer learns the normal spacing of the crank sensor pulses, then flags any cylinder that falls behind.
If the misses land on one cylinder, you get a code with that cylinder's number, like P0301 for cylinder 1. If they move around or hit several cylinders, you get P0300. That's why it often shows up next to two or three single cylinder codes.
Identifix puts it plainly. There's no single P0300 repair price, because the code doesn't point to one failed part. That's the gap this page fills. Below are the real prices for each fix, so you know what a fair quote looks like once the test is done.
What Each Usual Fix Costs
These are typical independent shop prices from our own repair cost guides. Each one adds the part price to the book labor time at $95 to $140 an hour. The California column uses $120 to $175 an hour.
| The Fix | Parts | Labor Hours | Midsize Car, National | Midsize Car, California |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One ignition coil | $50 to $180 | 0.5 to 1.5 | $100 to $390 | $110 to $440 |
| Full set of spark plugs | $40 to $160 | 0.8 to 2 | $115 to $440 | $135 to $510 |
| Mass airflow sensor | $90 to $320 | 0.3 to 0.8 | $120 to $430 | $125 to $460 |
| Crankshaft position sensor | $30 to $160 | 0.6 to 2 | $85 to $440 | $100 to $510 |
| One fuel injector | $150 to $600 | 1 to 3 | $245 to $1,020 | $270 to $1,125 |
| Fuel pump | $150 to $450 | 1.5 to 3 | $290 to $870 | $330 to $975 |
| Intake manifold gasket, for a vacuum leak | $40 to $300 | 2 to 6 | $230 to $1,140 | $280 to $1,350 |
| Catalytic converter, if the misfire killed it | $300 to $1,400 | 1 to 2 | $395 to $1,680 | $420 to $1,750 |
| Head gasket, for low compression | $200 to $500 | 8 to 14 | $960 to $2,460 | $1,160 to $2,950 |
MechanicRank repair cost guides as of October 2026. A midsize sedan or small SUV. Trucks, hybrids and European cars cost more. Before sales tax. Not a quote for your car.
Read that table top to bottom and you can see why the test matters. The first two rows are the usual suspects. The last two rows are what happens when a misfire gets ignored, or when the engine itself is worn.
A cracked vacuum hose is the cheap cousin of the intake gasket row. It's often a hose and a few minutes of labor once a smoke test finds it. A cracked hose can make every cylinder run lean at once, which is a classic way to set P0300 with no single cylinder code beside it. Our free lesson on fuel trims shows how a tech spots that on the scan tool.

What Our Own Jobs Show
We keep a public study of what customers actually paid at Supercanic. It covers 953 paid jobs from August 2025 to October 2026, and 92% of them were done at the customer's home or work. The full table is on our mobile mechanic prices page.
| Job Type | Paid Jobs | Median Paid | Middle Half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit only | 254 | $150 | $125 to $175 |
| Spark plugs and coils | 19 | $214 | $150 to $350 |
| Fuel pump or injectors | 15 | $530 | $292 to $721 |
Supercanic paid jobs, August 2025 to October 2026, before sales tax. Most were in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Middle half is the 25th to 75th percentile.
Two things stand out. About one job in four was a diagnostic visit and nothing else. Finding the problem is often the whole job, and it's the cheapest line on the list. And the plug and coil jobs came in near the low end of our guide range. That fits what Kelley Blue Book says, which is that worn or damaged spark plugs are the most common cause of this code.
The fuel jobs cost more than twice as much. That's the reason not to let a shop start with a fuel pump on a hunch. A fuel pressure gauge settles that question in minutes.
Flashing or Steady Changes Everything
Unburned fuel from a dead cylinder goes straight into the exhaust. It burns inside the catalytic converter and overheats it. That's how a $115 plug job turns into a $395 to $1,680 converter job.
The flashing light is a legal rule, not a style choice. California's OBD II rule, 13 CCR 1968.2, makes carmakers set a misfire level that would damage the converter, judged in 200 revolution windows. Once the car crosses it, the light has to blink once per second while the misfire is happening. A smaller misfire, judged over 1,000 revolutions, only has to turn the light on steady.
There's a catch most guides skip. The same rule lets a car that shuts off fuel to the dead cylinder keep the light steady instead of blinking. So a steady light on a car that shakes hard is not proof the misfire is mild. If the engine is bucking, treat it like a flashing light.
How a Good Shop Runs Down a P0300
A fair diagnostic follows the cheap checks first. Ask the shop to walk you through what it tested.
- Freeze frame and misfire counts. The scan tool shows the speed, load and temperature when the code set, and which cylinders are missing most.
- Plugs and coils. Pull the plugs and look at them. Swap a suspect coil to another cylinder and see if the miss follows it.
- Vacuum leaks. A smoke test fills the intake with visible smoke and shows cracked hoses and leaking gaskets.
- Fuel trims and fuel pressure. High positive trims point to a lean engine. A gauge proves whether the pump keeps up.
- Sensors. A dirty mass airflow sensor can make the engine run lean. A bad crank sensor can make the computer count misses that aren't real.
- Compression. If everything above passes, a compression or leakdown test checks the engine itself.
Our lesson on misfires goes deeper on each step. Kelley Blue Book also warns that skipping steps leads to a wrong call, which is how people end up with new parts and the same code.
If the shop needs to take the engine apart to find it, ask first. California's Bureau of Automotive Repair says there may be a charge for a teardown, even if you don't go ahead with the repair.

Old Advice That Stuck
Just throw plugs at it. Plugs are the most common fix, so it's a fair first guess on a car past its plug interval. On a car with fresh plugs, it's $115 to $440 spent on a hunch. Pull one and look first.
Clear the code and see if it comes back. Clearing it erases the freeze frame, which is the best clue the tech has. KBB notes that a short term problem, like running very low on fuel, can set the code and then clear up. That's worth knowing. Just let the shop read the stored data before anyone wipes it.
A steady light means it's safe. Not always. The rule above lets some cars keep the light steady during a misfire that could hurt the converter.
Before You Approve the Job
Run this list with whoever quotes you.
- What did the test find? Ask which cylinders were missing and what proved the part was bad.
- Parts or diagnosis first? Ask what the diagnostic costs and whether it's credited toward the repair.
- One coil or all of them? One bad coil doesn't mean four. Ask why if the quote covers the whole set.
- Is the converter OK? If the light was flashing, ask whether they checked it.
- Written estimate. The FTC says it should list the problem, the parts and the labor, and it says to ask for the old parts back.
- California drivers. The Bureau of Automotive Repair says the shop needs your OK before it starts, and again before any added repairs.
Find a Shop for the Job
MechanicRank lists 48,054 repair shops and mechanics in 6,649 cities. Every listing shows the shop's phone, reviews and hours, and the phone rings the shop direct. Search your ZIP code and ask for a diagnostic before parts. If the light is flashing, ask for a mobile mechanic so the car doesn't have to be driven. Our page on a flashing check engine light covers what to do while you wait.
At Supercanic, our own shop, labor is $150 an hour, with a 90 day or 5,000 mile labor warranty.

Owners Ask Us
How to fix P0300 code cost?
Start with a diagnostic, which had a median of $150 across our 254 paid visits. Then the fix depends on the cause. One coil runs $100 to $390 and a full set of plugs $115 to $440 on a midsize car. A vacuum leak at the intake gasket can reach $1,140, and low compression costs far more.
What causes a P0300 code?
Anything that makes more than one cylinder miss. Worn spark plugs top the list. Weak coils, vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure, dirty injectors, a bad airflow or crank sensor and low compression are the others. A vacuum leak is a likely suspect when no single cylinder code shows up beside it.
How long can you drive with a P0300 code?
If the light is flashing, don't. Pull over and get a tow or a mobile mechanic, because the misfire is hurting the converter. If the light is steady and the engine runs smooth, drive gently and book a diagnostic within days. A hard shake means stop, even with a steady light.
What is the most common fix for P0300?
Spark plugs, then coils. Kelley Blue Book names worn plugs as the most common cause. Our 19 paid plug and coil jobs had a median of $214. Still, pull a plug and test the coils before buying a set, since a car with new plugs needs a different fix.
How expensive is it to fix a misfire?
Most misfire fixes land between $100 and $440 for a coil or plugs at an independent shop. Fuel injectors and pumps run $245 to $1,020. The expensive misfires are the ones that got ignored, because a dead converter costs $395 to $1,680 on a midsize car.
Can low gas cause a P0300 code?
It can. Kelley Blue Book notes that a short term problem, like running very low on fuel, can set the code. Once the problem clears, the light can go out while the code stays stored. If it comes back with a full tank, have it tested.
