Steering Rack Replacement Cost ($2,307 to $2,572) and What to Ask

Most U.S. drivers pay between $2,307 and $2,572 to replace a steering rack, based on RepairPal's national estimate. That covers parts and labor. The real number for your car can be a lot lower or a lot higher. A small sedan can cost about half that. A full size truck can cost far more.
We wrote this guide so you know what goes into the price and what to ask before you book. The steering rack is a key safety part, so it pays to get the job done right the first time.
Here is the short version.
- RepairPal's national average is $2,307 to $2,572. Labor runs about $537 to $787, and parts run about $1,770 to $1,784.
- The part is usually the biggest cost, and your make and model matters most.
- You will need a wheel alignment after the job. Ask if it is in the quote.
- Check for an open recall before you pay. Some recalls replace the rack for free.
- Get at least two written quotes that list the part type, labor hours, and alignment.
What a steering rack replacement costs
The bill has two parts. One is the rack itself. The other is the time it takes a mechanic to take out the old one and put in the new one.
RepairPal estimates labor at $537 to $787 and parts at $1,770 to $1,784 for an average car. Those are national averages, so your local shop rate will move the number up or down.
The car you drive changes the price more than anything else. Here are two examples from RepairPal's own estimates.
- A Toyota Corolla averages $1,401 to $1,640. Parts are typically around $889.
- A Ram 1500 averages $3,721 to $3,821. Parts are typically around $3,507.
- Most other cars fall somewhere around the national average. Ask the shop for a quote on your exact year, make, and model.
What moves the price up or down
Two cars with the same problem can end up with very different bills. Here is what makes the biggest difference.
Before you call around, find out if your car has hydraulic or electric power steering. Your owner's manual or the shop can tell you. It changes which part they order and how long the job takes.
- Hydraulic or electric steering. Electric racks are common on newer cars. They can cost more, and some need a setup step after they go in.
- Rebuilt or new rack. A rebuilt rack usually costs less up front. A new rack usually costs more. Compare the warranty on each.
- How hard the rack is to reach. On some cars the mechanic has to remove other parts first. That adds labor hours.
- Dealer or independent shop. Dealers often charge more per hour. Independent shops may cost less for the same work.
- Where you live. Shop labor rates vary a lot from one area to the next.
Repairs that often come with a steering rack job
A steering rack is rarely replaced all by itself. Once the front end is apart, a few other items tend to come up. Skipping them can mean a second trip to the shop.
- Tie rods. These link the rack to the front wheels. If they are worn, it often makes sense to replace them now since the labor overlaps. See our tie rod replacement cost guide.
- Power steering fluid and hoses. Hydraulic systems need fresh fluid after the rack is swapped. Worn hoses may need to be replaced too.
- Wheel alignment. This is not optional. AAA lists a steering rack replacement as a repair that calls for an alignment. See our wheel alignment cost guide.
- Power steering pump. On hydraulic systems, a failing pump can send debris into a new rack. Ask the shop to check it. See our power steering pump replacement cost guide.
Signs your steering rack may be going bad
A worn rack does not always fail all at once. Watch for these signs and get the car checked if you notice them. Some of them can also point to a simpler problem, like a worn tie rod or a bad alignment, so let a mechanic find the real cause before you agree to a new rack. Our guide on steering wheel vibration covers more causes.
- The steering feels loose or wanders on the highway.
- The wheel is hard to turn, mostly at low speed.
- You hear a clunk or knock when you turn.
- You see red or pink fluid under the front of the car.
- Your tires are wearing unevenly.
What to ask a shop on the phone
A vague phone quote is how people get surprised at pickup. Use this short script when you call. Write down each answer so you can compare shops side by side.
If a shop will not put the part type and labor hours in writing, we would keep looking.
- "I need a quote to replace the steering rack on my car. It is a [year, make, model]. Can you give me a written estimate?"
- "Is that price for a new rack or a rebuilt one? Which brand is it?"
- "How many labor hours does the job take, and what is your hourly rate?"
- "Is the wheel alignment included, or is that extra?"
- "Are tie rods, fluid, or hoses part of this price?"
- "What does the warranty cover, and for how long? Does it cover parts and labor?"
- "Can you check my VIN for an open steering recall first?"
Why getting this repair right matters
Your steering rack controls where the car goes. A rushed job or a low quality part can send you back to the shop in a few months. Skipping the alignment, or ignoring worn tie rods, only moves the cost down the road. The cheapest quote is not always the best deal. A fair price from a shop that stands behind its work usually costs less in the end.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a steering rack?
RepairPal puts the national average at $2,307 to $2,572 for parts and labor. Your car can land well below or above that. A Toyota Corolla averages $1,401 to $1,640, and a Ram 1500 averages $3,721 to $3,821, according to [RepairPal](https://repairpal.com/estimator/rack-and-pinion-replacement-cost).
Do I need an alignment after a new steering rack?
Yes. [AAA](https://mwg.aaa.com/via/car/wheel-alignment-or-balance) lists a steering rack replacement as one of the repairs that calls for a wheel alignment. Ask the shop if the alignment is in the quote or billed on its own.
Can I still drive with a bad steering rack?
We do not recommend it. The rack is what turns your front wheels. If the steering feels loose, heavy, or clunky, or you see fluid leaking under the front of the car, have it checked before you drive much farther. If the car does not feel safe, a mobile mechanic can look at it where it sits.
Is a rebuilt steering rack a good choice?
A rebuilt rack is often the lower cost choice, and many shops use them. Ask who rebuilt it, what the warranty covers, and how long it lasts. Compare that to the price and warranty on a new rack before you decide.
Should I check for a recall before paying for this repair?
Yes. Some recalls cover the steering rack at no cost. In one Honda Civic recall, dealers inspected and replaced the steering rack for free and also replaced damaged tires, according to [Consumer Reports](https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-recalls-defects/honda-civic-sedans-hatchbacks-recalled-for-steering-problem-a7538780192/). Enter your VIN at the [NHTSA recall site](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) before you pay out of pocket.
